Help U.S. businesses export to key markets in Africa. The U.S. Commercial Service (under the U.S. Department of Commerce-International Trade Administration) has a network of U.S. Export Assistance Centers (USEACs) across the United States with the mandate to help small and medium-sized businesses export overseas and find new markets. The Prosper Africa Initiative is looking closely at Africa, with its huge market potential, as an opportunity to grow U.S. exports and diversify market portfolios for U.S. companies. The project consists of four tasks and will be supporting the U.S. Export Assistance Center in Atlanta:
1) research the top products and services in demand in Africa. Key markets/countries will be provided to narrow research scope;
2) present “top products/services” findings to international trade team;
3) research U.S. companies in Georgia that manufacture or can provide the in-demand services for Africa; and
4) present findings of up to ten U.S. companies (based in Georgia) to the international trade team.
This background research is the essential first phase of a project geared toward specific engagement with U.S. businesses to promote markets in Africa and help U.S. businesses every step of the way toward making an export deal in Africa.

California is the 5th largest economy in the world, with leading edge products in a range of critical industry sectors. This internship will focus on two industries of great significance to Northern California’s economy: security/defense and agriculture. The student selected for this internship will conduct market research using online and offline resources, to identify and uncover promising, export-ready companies in these two industries, across the region. After having identified a pool of firms, our intern will help develop a tailored, customized outreach plan to help those firms expand their international sales, part of which will include helping assess the firms’ website globalization readiness using tools available here: https://www.trade.gov/ecommerce. The plan will also include researching relevant regulatory frameworks and potential distributors. This internship opportunity is offered through the U.S. Commercial Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration. U.S. Commercial Service offices in San Rafael, CA, and San Jose, CA, will be managing this program.
Both the defense/security industry as well as the agricultural sector have long been leading industries in Northern California. Home to over 20,000 tech companies, the SF Bay Area is the nation’s leading hub for cyber, 5G, cloud, AI and emerging IT. While many of the larger tech firms may be fully plugged into global opportunities in the security sector, smaller firms may not. The latter will be the focus of the internship’s research effort. California is also the nation’s leading agricultural producing state, in terms of cash receipts (https://www.ers.usda.gov/faqs/#Q1). The industry encompasses not only California’s farm products – especially organic milk, fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts but also the world-famous wine industry, the growing craft beer and processed food sectors. In 2018, California’s agricultural exports totaled $21.02 billion in value, and agricultural exports have grown substantially over the past 10 years. (https://www.cdfa.ca.gov/statistics/PDFs/AgExports2018-2019.pdf). Our intern will also be responsible for revising and updating the Guide to Exporting Wine from California.
Special emphasis will be supporting promising export-ready enterprises in rural California. Even before the pandemic, rural companies, particularly those in economically-disadvantaged regions, faced not only a highly competitive global market, but also challenges related to transportation infrastructure, financial services availability, access to capital, and a readily-available and robust local trade network. Home to over 20,000 tech companies, the Bay Area is the nation’s leading hub for cyber, 5G, cloud, AI and emerging IT. Advanced manufacturing, biotech, e-mobility, renewable energy also feature strongly in the Bay Area’s innovation economy. Accelerating the flow of foreign talent and tech concepts is critical to the health of Bay Area’s innovation juggernaut, and it is vital for government at all levels to spur on foreign direct investment into this dynamic region.
The U.S. Commercial Service is an agency within the International Trade Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce, and its offices in San Francisco and San Jose are deeply engaged in this effort, working hand-in-hand with the State of California and city governments throughout the region.
The student intern would first examine the key elements that are necessary for foreign investors to open a physical presence in the United States. These elements would include such considerations as obtaining visas, opening bank accounts, navigating the real estate market, understanding tax/accounting best practices, learning how to hire Americans, registering a company, understanding venture capital, among others.
The student intern would then draft a Guide to Investing in the Bay Area. This guide, drafted under the supervision of the Directors of the U.S. Commercial Service offices in San Francisco and San Jose, would summarize the key elements for foreign investors outlined above through the prism of the Bay Area. It would include key golden rules on investing provided by Bay Area investment facilitators such as law firms, incubators, and successful foreign investors.
The guide would also summarize the assistance programs available to foreign investors through the Federal Government, the State of California, the Cities of San Francisco and San Jose and others. In summary, the Guide to Investing in the Bay Area would encapsulate the spectrum of essential components to help foreign investors break into the Bay Area, from best practices, to available assistance programs, to existing resources, to key contact information, with the goal of helping foreign investors to proceed with more confidence and expand FDI into the Bay Area.
The finalized guide resulting from this student internship will be used as a key instrument for the U.S. Commercial Service in promoting the Bay Area to foreign investors through ongoing counseling with foreign clients and networking with the 75+ foreign consulates in the Bay Area, and at upcoming investment promotion events. The student intern would learn the practical considerations of investment and make key contacts in the Bay Area’s business and public sectors involved in foreign investment. The student intern would come away with not only a polished and actionable report, but also a significant understanding of investing and a real life experience about doing business in the U.S. through the eyes of a foreign investor. |
