Africa's Role in Global Security: Literature Reviews by Region |
Find existing research on the role of four regions, the Red Sea Littorals, East, West, and North Africa, in global security. Prepare a literature review for each region. Although literature reviews should be at a Master's level in terms of content, they are expected to be less than five pages each. |

These literature reviews will inform the development of a strategic-level forum with senior-level interagency participation. Interns are expected to be able to produce formal documents that do not require considerable additional editing in terms of grammar and style. Interns with academic experience on Africa, particularly African security, are highly encouraged to apply. Interns will be asked to submit an academic paper on any topic as a writing sample. |

What do security trends say about African countries' significance to U.S. interests in 5-10 years? |
Interns will look online for multiple datasets or trend analysis that can be used as indicators of what security in different African countries will look like in five to ten years. Interns will then use more qualitative research to identify how U.S. interests will likely be impacted by these trends. |

Many academic, policy, and development organizations conduct research on diverse angles of African security, such as arms sales and trafficking, environmental conflict drivers, criminal activity, violent extremist activity, violence towards journalists, the nexus of African resource markets and conflict, demographic shifts impacting and livelihoods and human security, ICT transformation and external interference impacting governance and political violence, etc. The intern will identify and catalogue these datasets, decide how to weight and combine them as a collective set of indicators, then analyze them to infer trends over the coming decade. This will conclude part one of the internship. Part two will use more qualitative research methods to explain how these trends impact U.S. interests over the same time period. The intern will provide a valuable external perspective re-examining what will the top five to ten U.S. interests in Africa will be in 2030. The intern should feel comfortable thinking creatively, working with ambiguity and complexity, and coming up with their own outside the box analysis and assertions. The intern should be prepared to think of ways to overcome research challenges and should be self-motivated. Interns are expected to give at least 80 hours of concentrated work between October and May in addition to email coordination. |

A great way to give back to underserved communities across the country and help transitioning Veterans too!
Each branch of the military operates a Congressional-mandated Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program, not targeted at recruiting, but to instill citizenship values in youth. Only retired military members can serve as Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps instructors. Ironically, a large number of retiring military members are unaware of this amazing opportunity. We need a fresh assessment of the Department of Defense processes that serve to inform retiring military members of this opportunity.
Once assigned to your Military Service's national level JROTC program office, you will develop a
communications plan (COMPLAN) to more effectively reach qualified Veterans and encourage them to
become JROTC Instructors.
Two (2) Interns will be assigned to each Military Service JROTC program. Together, and in coordination with
your mentor(s), you will develop, present for approval, and begin executing a COMPLAN to help fill JROTC
Instructor vacancies across the US.
Drawing on their varied military experiences leading young people in often stressful and dangerous situations, Instructors teach high school students leadership, problem solving, mental and physical resiliency, along with a host of other skills that develop teens into young adults. For over a hundred years, JROTC has prepared generations of service-oriented citizens skilled in leadership, respectful of responsible government and aware of the role played by the public sector.
School districts with JROTC programs serve every type of community in our Nation, with particular emphasis on historically disadvantaged (urban and rural) communities which are comprised predominantly of minority demographic students. Some JROTC programs average 40% female cadets.
Interns should expect to work with a broad spectrum of stakeholders within their Military Service, across the
Defense Department, and potentially even other Federal Executive Branch Departments and Agencies like
Labor, Veterans Affairs, and Education. There is also a strong possibility of working with state and local
governments along with private sector companies and non-profit organizations |

The Defense Attaché Office (DAO) at U.S. Embassy Abu Dhabi, UAE is continuously updating its knowledge of its host nation military leadership. Much of this information is available through publicly-available sources. Ability to read Arabic, while not essential, will be helpful in this endeavor. The selected intern will corroborate existing DAO information and identify gaps in knowledge to focus interactions with host nation partners. The selected intern will provide organizational charts with key elements of information, such as individuals' names, military ranks, position, date of appointment, and a photo, when available. In the end, the DAO will have a more comprehensive understanding of the UAE military organization and military attachés can focus on satisfying gaps in the DAO's understanding. All research is done at the open source level, using publicly available information. |

This is an exciting opportunity to explore a window of an embassy team that not many people know about. This type of foundational research is essential, as DAOs never have enough people and therefore, never enough time to fact check their understanding of their partner organizations. |

Compared to other forms of inter-state conflict, cyberspace conflict is in its academic infancy. Multiple theories exist on the causal aspect of interactions in cyberspace, supported by differing levels of logic, anecdotes, and data. This project asks students to explore a specific theory and/or model of cyberspace in detail or to draw on existing evidence to develop one of their own on relationships in cyberspace. The student will also provide potential implications of their research on the organization, personnel, and policies of the U.S. government and, more specifically, the military and the Army. The sponsor may ask students to aggregate and collect data to test their model. Students may also choose a sub-topic that assists the command in other ways, such as talent management, impacts to force management, data collection and measurement, or other topics.
|
|
United States |
|
There exist a number of ongoing areas of research for the command. The intern may request an area of interest and/or the sponsor may ask the intern to work on a particular subject based on mission requirements. Interns may work individually or collaborate as part of a team, depending on the specific subject. |
