The successful candidate will work directly with the staff of the West Atlanta Watershed Alliance who manage the Atlanta Children’s Forest Network through an agreement with the USDA Forest Service. The Covid-19 pandemic has created an opportunity for us to get creative in our program delivery. The critical need is to improve the web-based and virtual presence of the Atlanta Children’s Forest Network and West Atlanta Watershed Alliance. Duties may include writing a conservation based blog, developing conservation education materials, including videos, for the website, suggestions to improve website design and functionality, creating online outreach materials to help market the Atlanta Children’s Forest Network, and editing and proofreading. We encourage you to visit this website http://wawa-online.org/photographs/ to see the community we serve.
The Atlanta Children’s Forest Network was initiated in 2012 to provide greater opportunity to get families active in nature. Emphasis is on underserved communities who in large part are uncomfortable in forests. Engaging these communities in programs in publicly-owned forested areas in their neighborhood will get them comfortable and teach them outdoor skills. Programs will motivate, encourage, and reduce barriers for underserved West Atlanta youth (and youth across Metro Atlanta), to learn about and enjoy urban forests, learn necessary skills and take critical action as stewards of local environments. Connecting urban youth of color to nature will inspire an environmental ethic in them and expose them to environmental careers.
West Atlanta neighborhoods are primarily composed of working class African American citizens facing multiple environmental stressors and hazards, with minimal access to existing resources and services.
The West Atlanta Watershed Alliance identified a need to increase the number of children and families who reconnect with nature, enhancing their outdoor experience. Creating the Atlanta Children’s Forest Network allowed partners to expand existing basic urban forestry education and stewardship programs at the underutilized parks, nature preserves, and expansive greenspaces within the city limits.
We need your talent, skills, and creativity to help us take our online presence to a higher level. Thanks for considering us.

The NatureWatch Program website https://www.fs.fed.us/naturewatch/ is a hub for nature-based experiential learning offered at the Forest Service and through partners. Engaging people of all demographics and learning styles through an agency website is challenging. We utilize video, social media, story maps, webinars, critter cams, apps, print, and online media to attract diverse audiences to our content; and we need help! Intern should bring innovation to this opportunity and share an enthusiasm for attracting people to appreciate, respect, and enjoy the many wonderful qualities of animals and nature, with an eye for how the Forest Service and partners are helping to manage and conserve them throughout the U.S. Creative skills in portraying technical information (infographics, video, brochures, flyers, booklets, photography, graphic design) would be great assets to this position, as would a solid understanding of environmental education and ecology.
Bring your ideas! This is a wonderful growth opportunity for someone seeking national-level experience in communications and environmental education. |

Contribute to an exciting new initiative which annually recognizes and promotes four top performing landscape plants that support biodiversity in our parks, gardens, and commercial landscape plantings. As rapid and widespread urbanization and habitat fragmentation continue to threaten diverse populations of critically important insect pollinators in Georgia it has become increasingly important to look to our landscape plantings as a means to conserve them. This requires building new connections between conservation professionals, the green industry, and consumers in order to increase availability and awareness of ecologically-relevant landscape plants. The Georgia Pollinator Plants of the Year program aims to do just that.
Program Goals
1. Create a network of horticultural professionals through which plant materials and propagation techniques can be shared.
2. Increase statewide availability and diversity of pollinator-supporting plants for consumers.
3. Educate consumers about the increasingly important impact that landscaping and home gardens can have on pollinator populations.
Interns will have the opportunity to work directly with Science and Conservation staff at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia (affiliated with the University of Georgia) to create marketing materials and organize a media and communications plan as we prepare for the inaugural launch of this program in 2021. Create a Database for Land Management Project Proposals, Tracking, Approval, & Monitoring |
Streamline the Cumberland Ranger District of the Daniel Boone National Forest's project planning and implementation process! Help us centralize information to increase project planning and tracking, allowing employees and partners to spend more time restoring, enhancing, and sustaining the forest. |

Data analysis, Data visualization |
The Cumberland Ranger District manages 167,000 acres national forest resources over a complex landscape that sees heavy public demand for recreation and is full of unique natural and cultural resources that the agency is responsible for protecting and conserving. The District is actively engaged in forest restoration and recreation management projects and works diligently to plan and implement projects with minimal or no impacts to sensitive resources. The pace of project planning and implementation has increased over the last five years and the District is working to streamline the planning, review, and approval of these projects and monitor implementation and results over time. Presently, these efforts are managed through a series of forms and spreadsheets that get bounced around in e-mails and edited through cloud and server links. Streamlining these processes and centralizing the information will reduce the time required to plan and track projects and allow district employees and agency partners to spend more time restoring, enhancing, and sustaining the forest. We are seeking assistance from an individual who is interested in learning about how district resources are managed, understanding the laws and policies that the agency must comply with, and working to develop a more centralized process to enter, store, and access information, including a spatial component linked to the agency’s corporate GIS Database. Several forms and spreadsheets need to be merged into a web-based form and database that links to the agency’s GIS Database and compliments several other corporately developed and managed natural resource databases. Success will require the individual to learn about natural resource and forest management, the laws and regulations that guide management efforts, and the processes and procedures used to ensure compliance. The eIntern will need to participate in bi-weekly staff meetings, along with several additional conversations and interviews with individual employees and program managers. The project will be broken up into three parts: a learning phase where the intern develops an understanding of the District’s needs for this project; a development phase where the intern works to develop a web-based database (and potentially an app that can be used on mobile devices) that will help the District develop and plan projects, work towards project approvals, and track and monitor projects over time; and a third phase where the database is tested and refined. |
|
United States |
|
Experience with and skills in database design, web-form development, and app development are strongly desired. Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems will help the intern with their success, but not critical. Interest in public land and natural resource management and how technology can assist land managers is helpful.
The Cumberland Ranger District is a team of employees who are committed to sustaining national forest resources and serving the public. Our team embraces technology and works well in a remote environment, frequently using video conferencing technologies. Whether you are in Kentucky or on the other side of the world, we welcome your assistance in helping manage our public lands. |

Virtual Native American excavations: Conduct archaeological investigations online! |
Choose from one of four fascinating research topics: Cherokee place name research, Elisha Mitchell (Mt. Mitchell), “Lettered Rock”, or Balsam Mountains petroglyph sites. |

1. Cherokee Place Name Research - Create a a historic map and reference research for the origin of topographic place-names (mountain peaks, rivers, etc.) suspected of being associated with the ancestral Cherokee’s former occupation. This research focus pertains to the Blacks mountain range located in the western North Carolina Appalachian highlands (Pisgah National Forest) including several of the highest peaks in Eastern North America.
2. Elisha Mitchell is known for establishing Mt. Mitchell as the highest mountain peak in Eastern North America in the 1820s. Located along the Blacks Mountain Range (Pisgah National Forest), this research project will specifically focus on investigating the Mitchell records for notations, documentation, stories or any Native American (Cherokee) content Mitchell may have recorded during his early 20th Century efforts.
3. There are a few historic references for the “Lettered Rock” once located on the Grandfather Ranger District of the Pisgah National Forest. It is named so because the carvings or paintings once described there resembled Native American picture writing. There are map notations (1920s/1930s) for the location of the Lettered Rock, but no known pictures or in depth personal accounts for what was there. This research project will focus on finding any historic references or photographs of the Lettered Rock that may authenticate it as a pre-contact Native American petroglyph or pictograph.
4. In Haywood County, on the Pisgah National Forest, conduct research of the Balsam Mountains for the possible location of Native American petroglyphs described in prominent historic Cherokee stories specific to that area. Several petroglyph sites have been documented and associated with Spirit World cosmographic stories about Judaculla (Tsul-ka-lu), an especially potent Cherokee Spirit World being considered as being the “Master of Game Animals”. One rock carving or petroglyph described in the Cherokee lore has yet to be found or authenticated, but local Haywood County histories or family stories may provide clues to its location - This research project will focus on delving into local historic reference materials or individuals for information about the possible presence of petroglyphs in the area. |

The Joint Forestry Team (JFT), https://www.jointforestryteam.com, a collaboration between the Forest Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, National Association of Conservation Districts, and National Association of State Foresters is enhancing outreach, education and support to farmers, ranchers and private forest landowners. Close to sixty percent of the nation’s forests are owned and managed by private forest landowners and 30,000 farmers have implemented agroforestry practices for economic and environmental benefits. The JFT works through our state leadership to support private forest landowners in maintaining healthy forests that provide numerous public benefits including clean air and water, wildlife habitat, and recreation. Engaging private landowners, especially underserved landowners, is challenging. We are currently gathering information on successful outreach efforts in each of our respective organizations. The intern will help develop research questions, interview partners, and write compelling in-depth stories to highlight goals, challenges, and outcomes of the landowners served, as well as key resource issues. The stories will be the basis of blog posts, webinars, and booklets for agencies and organizations seeking to enhance their outreach efforts. |
