Are you a talented and artistic individual that can create a series of graphic design images, materials, and infographics to help deliver and promote responsible wildlife viewing practice? As wildlife disturbances from human activities is a growing issue in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the need to creatively communicate sustainable and responsible behavior for enjoying and respecting wildlife is needed for increased protection. Using our graphic standards, you'll collaborate with our team to create images that align with our “Ocean Etiquette” and “Don’t Be That Guy” messaging: https://sanctuaries.noaa.gov/protect/oceanetiquette.html.
You'll design a series of clear engaging graphic images for print and digital needs that demonstrate desirable human behavior around wildlife, including coastal birds and marine mammals. This could include graphics for brochures, posters, website, social media, and other marketing materials as needed. With your help, we're looking for innovative ways to engage our audiences with important conservation messages.
Designated in 1992, Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is a federally protected marine area offshore of California's central coast. Stretching from Marin to Cambria, the sanctuary encompasses a shoreline length of 276 miles and 6,094 square statute miles of ocean. It is one of our nation's largest national marine sanctuaries, and is larger than Yellowstone National Park. https://montereybay.noaa.gov/ |

Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary is a wild ocean place teeming with life off the coast of Massachusetts. This exceptional area was designated as a national marine sanctuary in 1992 to protect the resources for which it is famous: marine mammals, biodiversity, and maritime and cultural heritage. We are part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, which serves as the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 600,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters. The system works with diverse partners and stakeholders to promote responsible, sustainable ocean uses that ensure the health of our most valued ocean places.
For marine conservation to be successful, all communities need to be actively engaged in the conversations and solutions. We are seeking creative and passionate team members with storytelling skills, energy, and ideas to help us increase Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary’s visibility and engage more people in achieving our mission.
You’ll collaborate with our Program Coordinators to:
• Research and draft multimedia content (posts, videos, infographics, for Facebook and Twitter, and possibly other social media platforms)
• Survey social media activity to identify emerging trends and recommend opportunities for future social media engagement relevant to the sanctuary’s diverse audiences
• Create visually appealing templates and content for emails, newsletters, and other outreach tools.
• Research and identify communities to include in our outreach and engage as partners in our mission.
• Translate content into Spanish (a nice addition if at least one of our interns has this skill but not a requirement)
Your work with Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary will significantly contribute to our ongoing outreach and conservation efforts. In return, we will design this opportunity to help you achieve your personal and professional goals, have fun, and make a difference. |

Creating Visually Appealing Infographics to Share Data and Information on U.S. Atlantic Coral Reefs |
Seeking a graphic designer to create infographics to share data from the National Coral Reef Monitoring Program with NOAA leadership, partners (federal, state, counties, and academic institutions), and the general public. |

Data visualization, Graphic design, Infographic design |
The National Coral Reef Monitoring Program samples fish and coral data in the U.S. Atlantic jurisdictions. This includes the Gulf of Mexico (Flower Garden Banks), Southeast Atlantic (Florida - Dry Tortugas, Florida Keys, and Southeast Florida), and U.S. Caribbean (U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico). Fish and coral data are collected to monitor the health/status of the ecosytem, general trends, and assess management strategies.
We would like to create fresh graphics that can be used now and minimally updated in the future to share data with leadership, partners, and the public. Specifically, we would like to produce a cruise report infographic. This would be a colorful and artistic representation of data immediately following a 10-14 day mission. We know the data that we would like to be represented and just need a motivated intern to bring it to life. In addition, similar artistic assistance is needed for a data summary report and other opportunities are available as well. We want the important data that we collect on our valuable coral reef resources to be eye catching, professional, and interesting. |

Code Translator for Coral Reef Fish Data |

Coding |
The National Coral Reef Monitoring Program monitors fishes and corals in the U.S. Atlantic jurisdiction (USVI, Puero Rico, Florida, Flower Garden Banks). Our site allocations (where we want to sample) and other analyses have been constructed in SAS. We are seeking an individual to translate our SAS code to R code. R is now readily used by the scientific community and it is important we modernize our methods and analyses on U.S. coral reefs to make them accessible.
The dataset that we work with is large and describes changes in reef fish and coral communities over time. This dataset has a fair number of nuances (as most do) so we are looking for a detail oriented individual. We want someone that isn't afraid to get into the coding weeds and is comfortable creating comments and functions to make the new code user friendly (to someone without any experience). Other coding opportunities are available if the translation of SAS code happens quickly. |

The NOAA Office of National Marine Sanctuaries serves as the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 600,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters from Washington state to the Florida Keys, and from Lake Huron to American Samoa. Our mission is to protect and enhance these natural and cultural treasures for future generations through scientific research, resource protection, management and education. Cordell Bank NMS is entirely offshore with no land/coastal boundaries. We use digital and social media as tools to communicate about the incredible natural resources, habitats, ecosystems and resource management issues that are hard for most people to grasp due to the offshore nature of the sanctuary.
Cordell Bank NMS is an offshore underwater jewel beaming with stories about underwater landscapes filled with diverse marine life as well as being a destination feeding area for animals traveling from all around the Pacific to feed here. Do you like whales? dolphins? fish? ocean invertebrates? deep sea? plankton? Are you interested in learning more about ocean research, ocean dynamics, threats to the ocean?
You will become familiar with various sanctuary programs and ways the sanctuary engages in ocean conservation and management. You will help create messages for social media outlets and web content that communicate our efforts and support development of outreach projects as they arise (including video editing from long segments to short interesting segments, and other graphic design support).
We are looking for motivated self-starters with an interest in marine conservation and creative storytelling. Strong independent skills, writing and editing skills are a must, along with a knowledge of social media trends and best practices. Other desired qualifications include: fluency with google docs, video editing software for trimming down longer clips to short interesting clips, excellent writing and copyediting skills using AP style, creativity storytelling ability with a sense of humor, but attention to science facts a plus! You will be willing to research and develop content for a non-scientific audience and use best professional judgement when representing our Federal Agency/NOAA.

Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) is a site within the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries with dozens of staff, over 100 active volunteers, and over 500 active recreational divers and charter captains that participate in recognition programs. Due to the large scale of the FKNMS, an online training program is vital to our ability to reach out remotely and ensure a standard of knowledge among participants of various programs. The web development intern will have a strong interest in writing maintainable JavaScript (Vue) components that can be composed in lessons and extending the general usefulness of the website with other special projects that may come up. You will work with a very small team and help make implementation and design choices. Familiarity with working in and creating a design system is beneficial. The current site is being written using Nuxt, Express, TailwindCSS, and MongoDB so familiarity with these is helpful, but not required. Help make a difference and build something awesome to put on your resume knowing you'll be empowered to make design and architecture decisions. Use this opportunity to experiment with important new web technologies and strategies, focusing on things like accessibility, AR, and progressive web app readiness. This is a great project if you are interested in full-stack or just want to build a breadth of knowledge and skills.
The website will be a series of modules with associated quizzes. Users can create an account that keeps a training record and associates them with a business, team, or program. The administrator side of the site will allow program coordinators to track progress, prompt completion, run basic reports, and perform basic CRUD operations on records. An interest in making engaging learning games/quizzes definitely encouraged. |

Familiarity with Node, Vue, Mongo, Express, git, and TailwindCSS preferred. Interns will work collaboratively and must have their own computer access. |

The coral reefs at the foot of Florida are legendary, making up a barrier reef that spans more than 255 continuous miles. The reefs are home to lobster, sea turtles, fish, and more, and they have protected the coastline from storm surge for thousands of years. But these coral reefs, like coral reefs across the globe, are in serious trouble.
In recent decades, the coral reefs within Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS) have been damaged by hurricanes, bleaching, disease, and heavy human use. The sanctuary and its partners are working diligently to protect the reefs, but our efforts have not been able to keep up with the decline. Now, NOAA and our partners are launching Restoring Seven Iconic Reefs: A Mission to Recover the Coral Reefs of the Florida Keys, one of the largest investments in reef restoration anywhere in the world. By restoring corals at seven iconic reef sites in Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, we can change the trajectory of an entire ecosystem and help save one of the world’s most unique areas for future generations.
This internship will provide support to FKNMS education and outreach staff in the development of stewardship programs to support Mission: Iconic Reefs. These programs will engage volunteers and scuba divers in reef restoration. Additionally, this internship will support the development of education programs and materials, including lesson plans, activity books and more, to raise awareness of the ecosystems protected within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and how people can become stewards of this special place.

Do you like the ocean? Want to learn more about some interesting ocean topics? Archived ocean radio programs with themes about elephant seals, sex in the sea (how ocean animals reproduce!), climate change, and deep sea research are just a few of the topics you'll learn about while listening to the archived shows. We want to make these archived shows accessible to all people, especially those who are deaf and hard of hearing. To do that we need someone to listen and type what they hear into a template, spellcheck and "flag" words that are inaudible or not understandable to be filled in by your supervisor. There are about 20 episodes to transcribe. You will get to listen to interesting ocean content while you type into the program template provided by your supervisor. In addition, when you hear something unique and/or interesting, you can compose some tweets for the sanctuary to use in the future to promote the archived show/content on the sanctuary website. This helps more people to become aware about this fun ocean content and build their awareness about the ocean. |
