With over 2.5 million followers, USAID’s flagship social media accounts are a vital gateway with which to tell the story of our impact around the globe. The ideal intern will use their storytelling and graphic design skills to craft social media content for U.S. and international audiences. The social media intern will help collect, create, and draft content for each of our four platforms and will pro-actively seek opportunities to drive, join, or share ongoing digital conversations that relate to USAID strategic priority areas. Interns with graphic design and videography experience will also have the opportunity to create pictograms, GIFs, infographics, video snippets and other visuals. Your USAID supervisor is open to new ideas and will happily brainstorm new projects and ideas for our social platforms.
What you can expect from this internship:
- Weekly check-in calls where you will be tasked with new projects, and where you can ask any questions on the previous weeks content/projects
- Progressive learning: you won't be doing mundane tasks, you will be doing a range of things that any communicator working as a social media manager would be doing in a regular job: drafting a content calendar, creating social media posts, designing graphics/pictograms, accessing data and metrics to inform best practices, writing and updating social media guides and more.
- A mentor with 10+ years of international development experience, nine of which have been spent working at USAID - who cares about your progress as a communicator and will work with you to create valuable experiences and products that will have an impact on your resume. |

This internship is open to up to three individuals. You will work under the supervision of USAID's impeccable social media manager who works remotely full time and has experience working with VSFS interns over the past 8 years. You will be able to network and work with a whole range of communicators and creators at USAID, including graphic design artists, writers/editors, and videographers. Estimated time commitment is negotiable, but roughly 3-10 hours/week. |

USAID is committed to accountability, transparency, and evidence-based management for all our programs in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region. The LAC Bureau supports use of innovative monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) systems, methods, technologies, and tools that generate the quality data and robust evidence needed to maximize results of a wide range of programs.
To that end, the LAC Bureau seeks 1-3 virtual student interns, representing a variety of social science backgrounds, to support various MEL efforts in the coming year. Illustrative examples include:
- Researching and analyzing third-party sources of data for use in strategic planning and context monitoring
- Synthesizing USAID evaluations and drafting “learning briefs”
- Identifying and synthesizing other donors’ evaluations and assessments on specific topics, such as private sector engagement or enhancing country capacity |
|
United States |
|
To complement program performance data, USAID uses regional and national development data supplied by international organizations, national governments, and independent third-party organizations to inform strategic planning and monitor regional and national contexts that affect ongoing programs. In 2018, USAID launched Journey to Self-Reliance Country Roadmaps, which help the Agency and our partners understand how self-reliant each of our partner countries is overall – as well as each country’s self-reliance strengths and challenges – and tailor partnerships accordingly (For more information, go to https://selfreliance.usaid.gov/ ). Together, these data help us ensure USAID programs continue to be a strategic and effective use of taxpayer funds.
USAID also commissions external, independent evaluations (performance and impact) of individual programs, or groups of programs. External, independent evaluations commissioned by USAID are published on USAID’s DEC website (see https://dec.usaid.gov/dec/content/evaluations.aspx ). In addition, studies and assessments—which focus on broader, often cross-cutting, themes or technical sectors—also help the LAC Bureau and field missions to synthesize and analyze data and evidence generated by USAID and our development partners. |

Vietnam has experienced remarkable economic growth over the past 30 years, transforming from a poor nation to a lower-middle income country. The Government of Vietnam’s ultimate objective is for the country to achieve upper-middle income status by 2023.
USAID supports Vietnam to strengthen the country’s legal and regulatory framework in order to promote investment, economic growth and rising incomes. Working directly with the Government of Vietnam (GVN), the private sector and other stakeholders, USAID supports Vietnam’s transition to a rules-based market economy more fully aligned to international markets and standards. This includes support for more inclusive, participatory, transparent and accountable public policy processes related to economic governance and trade.
Presently, USAID/Vietnam’s Economic Growth and Governance Office (EG2) is managing a $116 million portfolio comprising 11 projects. More details about these programs can be accessed on the USAID/Vietnam website.
The EG2 Office currently uses several channels for disseminating and sharing information about our activities, including internal weekly reports and social media postings of public events. Our office would like to amplify and broaden these efforts not only to raise awareness but to share learning and knowledge across the mission, other USG agencies, GVN stakeholders, implementing partners, and private sector players.
Tasks will include:
* Develop a communications strategy for the Office, including mapping of target audience, crafting of key messages/themes
* Review and update existing fact sheets, website content, outreach materials, etc.
* Review and mine project reports and M&E databases for untold stories and lessons learned
* Prepare a recommended list of potential knowledge sharing products (including technical theme, format and length, target audience, etc.) |
|
Vietnam |
|
Nice to have:
* Familiarity with Vietnam and its economic development
* Familiarity with USAID
The intern will collaborate with all EG2 staff on the review and clearance of technical content.
The intern will coordinate with the Mission’s Development Outreach and Communications (DOC) Team to ensure that all deliverables conform to USAID branding and marking requirements. |

To achieve the objectives of the U.S. Government’s Global Food Security Strategy (GFSS), A Food Secure 2030 vision, and U.S. the Water for the World Strategy, we need to harness the creativity and energy of all people, regardless of identity. By 2050, the world will need 50 percent more food to feed a population of over 9.7 billion. Women, youth and people in any marginalized group are essential partners on the journey to self-reliance. At the same time, local capacity development and digital inclusion are both required foundations for inclusion and opportunity.
Intern will work on a subset of the work described below or other topics that may arise:
• Conduct trend analyses, including within the context of COVID-19, desert locust infestations and other emerging threats, of key inclusion indicators based on data available for USAID RFS priority countries and others.
• Update RFS information on the landscape of activities undertaken to engage women, youth and others in Feed the Future and other programming.
• Prepare research and issue briefs on topics related to inclusion and food systems, with a focus on agriculture-led growth (including systems approaches), resilience, nutrition and water security, sanitation and hygiene.
• Research and write brief stories describing program approaches and impact, capturing in particular the voices and experiences of marginalized people in collaboration with points of contact in USAID country missions.
• Conduct literature reviews on relevant topics such as inclusive market systems change approaches to agriculture-led growth and youth and water security.
Draft newsletter summarizing the latest research for policymakers.
Develop learning events to share state-of-the-art knowledge and programming.
• Suggest assignments based on interns’ own areas of interest and expertise as relevant to RFS inclusive development objectives.

For over a decade, the Bungee Book Club (BBC) members have come together to discuss books and share ideas. BBC members (a.k.a. Bungees, BBCniks, Bungestas) are primarily staff from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), but anyone can join. The only prerequisites are a love of reading, and a curiosity about human behavior. The mission of the BBC is to enrich the thinking, learning, and professional development of USAID staff and those in the larger development community. The intention is to foster leadership and growth that will collectively contribute to a stronger community.
Many of the BBC book selections focus on behavioral economics, organizational development, and productivity. The BBC provides a unique opportunity and the space for people to process and reflect on some of the latest thinking in these areas. The intention of the BBC is to support professional growth and help employees work more efficiently, effectively, and collaboratively.
For this project, we are looking for a student to review our book selections and update our website: http://thebbc.info/. We welcome interns with new ideas on how to modernize the website, make it more user friendly, and/or interactive. The VSFS intern must have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively on assigned tasks in a virtual environment. Prior experience writing web content is preferred but not required. We hope that our VSFS intern will find new ways to engage our book club members. |

Conduct a review of scientific literature on social protection, as well as a program inventory to identify critical gaps and opportunities in helping governments scale social protection programs, as well as inform how USAID can engage in this space. |

USAID-USA-2 |
|
Analytical writing, Cultural diplomacy, Data analysis, Research |
Social protection programming emerged roughly twenty years ago however, in the last decade it has become one of the three main elements of development, along with growth and human development. USAID sees social protection as a key strategy to build and strengthen resilience. Social protection is a means to reduce poverty, promote inclusive development, build social and human capital and achieve greater gender equity and social cohesion. It allows poor and vulnerable populations to break intergenerational cycles of poverty and augment human and social capital and contributes to the country’s journey to self-reliance.
Global responses to COVID 19 have demonstrated the critical importance social protection programs can play as part of disaster response. The flexing, adapting and expanding of government owned and led social protection programs represent an effective and efficient means to address immediate and short-term needs, reducing external investments in Humanitarian Assistance. USAID is interest in learning the key challenges and opportunities to helping governments expand social protection systems, as well as clear understanding of the current state of play in the social protection arena and where USAID should engage in that space.
The intern will support staff in the USAID Bureau for Resilience and Food Security, Center for Resilience (RFS/CR) to conduct research and analysis that will inform USAID priorities. This includes review, analysis and summary of relevant:
● Scientific and other literature
● Interviews with donors and other organizations such as the World Bank and International Labor Organization.
● Interviews with USAID mission staff and host country governments
The research and analysis may examine one or more of the following topics:
I. What Happening in Social protection?
• Who are the main actors?
• What are the main networks, fora, boards, agendas?
• What are key resources to learn about Social protection?
• Recommendations for USAID engagement
II. Social protection Inventory
• Conduct a social protection inventory in the 14 resilience focus countries.
o What social protection programs exist in country? (Social assistance, social insurance, labor market interventions)
o Who is funding them?
o Who are they reaching? For what purpose?
o Identify gaps and funding opportunities
o Will need to find contacts with World Bank and ILO at minimum, ask who else you should speak to.
• Conduct USAID Social protection Inventory
o What social protection programs are being funded by USAID?
Engage Education, Global Health, RFS, BHA, Africa Bureau
Engage missions in the 14 resilience focus countries
o What opportunities are there to invest in social protection? Where do programs exist that USAID could be supporting?
|
|
United States |
|
The ideal candidate will have education or experience in international development and/or sociology and a strong interest in these topics. The tasks of the intern will be finalized at the start of the internship based on USAID’s priorities at that time as well as the interests and skills of the intern. Depending on the intern’s skills and interest the following could also be included in the internship:
III. Develop Social Protection training materials
• Social Protection 101 presentation
• Sectoral guides ex. Social protection and Education, Social Protection and Health, Social protection and humanitarian assistance.
• Field guide for missions
o How to engage in social protection
o How to identify social protection programs
o Key things to consider for designing activities
• Social Protection talking points

Analytical writing, Data analysis, Design thinking, Research |
USAID has been investing in mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) since 1999 with the goal of improving the mental health and wellbeing of populations in low and middle income countries (LMIC). Programs supported by USAID have included provision of effective interventions, policy promotion, and system strengthening. However, USAID is a large and diverse agency without central coordination of MHPSS activities. The full picture of the agency’s activities, capacities, and needs has only recently begun to be mapped and described, through the efforts of the recently formed USAID internal MHPSS Working Group. This information has become critical as USAID increasingly recognizes the importance of MHPSS in LMIC.
This intern will assist USAID MHPSS technical experts to develop a complete description of the agency’s MHPSS activities, identify gaps in programming and capacity, and develop information and materials to meet those gaps. The overall result will be more efficient and effective support by USAID of the priority MHPSS needs of LMIC. Activities will include supporting a proposed MHPSS Evidence Summit that will bring together global MHPSS experts to inform USAID policy and practices.
Description of tasks:
- Track MHPSS activities of USAID, to build a database that provides a picture of the agency’s MHPSS activities and thereby informs gaps in USAID activities and capacity.

Topics in Global Food Animal Systems: Livestock Ownership and Environmental Enteric Dysfunction |
Support the Food Animal Systems Team in the Bureau for Resilience and Food Security at USAID by performing a literature review and landscape analysis on the linkages between food animal ownership, hygiene practices, and environmental enteric dysfunction using a One Health approach. |

The Bureau for Resilience and Food Security (RFS) houses four technical centers: the Center for Ag-Led Growth, Center for Water, Center for Nutrition, and the Center for Resilience. Food Animals are a cross-cutting topic for the Bureau as they contribute to agricultural production, economic prosperity, nutritious diets, and resilient populations. The Food Animal Systems Team within RFS is comprised of livestock and aquaculture experts representing various equities including agriculture, nutrition, and resilience. This team collaborates to provide technical assistance to Missions, assist with livestock program design, and elevate the importance of livestock and fish within the bureau. This team is seeking an intern to perform a literature review and landscape analysis on linkages between livestock ownership, hygiene practices, and environmental enteric dysfunction (EED), a subclinical disorder of intestinal function common in young children in tropical countries and in settings of poverty and economic disadvantage.
There is a significant body of evidence related to livestock ownership and its positive effects on economic and nutritional outcomes. A recent area of research explores the connections between livestock ownership, animal husbandry and EED including sanitation practices, exposure of children to animal feces, and comparative diversity of gut microflora populations between livestock and non-livestock owning households. Reducing exposure of children to animal feces and pathogens including Salmonella, Campylobacter, and E. coli in a low resource setting is a complex challenge which will benefit from a multisectoral One Health approach to develop practical solutions. The aim of this project is to perform a literature review and generate a report on current knowledge about EED, the linkages between livestock ownership and EED in developing countries, and emerging best guidance emanating from studies and field trials. This can include, but is not limited to, interventions to reduce EED among livestock owning households, studies that explore the gut health and nutritional statuses of members of livestock owning households, and genomic analyses that link bacteria in livestock to those seen in the guts of the humans that own them.
The landscape analysis will help identify any existing programs addressing EED and livestock in developing countries. This will be accomplished through reviewing work of USAID, our partners, and other donors to determine what work is ongoing that helps to elucidate the comparative positive and negative impacts of livestock ownership. The intern will engage with offices and partners to determine if they have any ongoing EED programming. The final deliverables will be a database of relevant literature and a written report consolidating the findings of the literature review and landscape analysis. If the intern has a desire, they can deliver a virtual presentation synthesizing their findings.

The intern will also be given the opportunity to contribute to team priorities per their interest and availability as well as gain a broader understanding of the role of USAID in promoting and supporting the global effort to achieve food security for the most vulnerable populations through the U.S. Government’s Feed the Future Initiative.
The Food Animal Systems team at RFS is a close knit and diverse group within RFS. The intern will receive mentorship from all team members and gain an understanding of the collaborative nature of USAID. An intern with an interest or background in any of the following areas is ideal: livestock production, animal health, behavior change, hygiene practices, or One Health.

Climate Change Adaptation and Mainstreaming--Research and Analysis to Inform USAID Priorities |
Conduct research and analysis of development projects and the scientific literature to inform USAID climate change adaptation and mainstreaming priorities. The intern may also prepare for and participate in interviews with partner organizations to help identify priorities, opportunities and gaps. |

Weather and climate impacts are already undermining progress in reducing poverty and improving economic growth in countries around the world, as well as compromising the effectiveness and resilience of U.S. development assistance. To address this, USAID supports climate change adaptation in developing countries and applies climate risk management (CRM) to USAID development assistance. USAID’s adaptation programming supports countries and communities to build their capacity to independently predict and prepare for climate variability and change so they can effectively deal with associated stresses and minimize losses and disruption. Through CRM, USAID assesses, addresses and adaptively manages climate risks to development programs in all sectors. To maximize impact, USAID climate adaptation and mainstreaming efforts should learn from experience, leverage USAID’s competitive advantage, be informed by and align with the efforts of others, and address global adaptation and development priorities.
The intern will support staff in the USAID Office of Global Climate Change (E3/GCC) and the Bureau for Resilience and Food Security, Center for Resilience (RFS/CR) to conduct research and analysis that will inform USAID priorities. This includes review, analysis and summary of relevant:
-Scientific and other literature
-Development projects and results produced by USAID, other donor organizations, non-governmental organizations and the private sector
-Interviews with donors and other organizations
-Climate change adaptation priorities and gaps, including mainstreaming
The research and analysis may examine one or more of the following topics:
-Opportunities for climate change adaptation programming that focuses on urban resilience, addresses migration, engages the private sector, responds to the COVID crisis and/or meets the needs of small island developing states (SIDS).
-Approaches to and results of climate change mainstreaming
-How climate adaptation and resilience relate and contribute to developing countries’ Journey to Self Reliance, including elucidation of potential capacity and commitment indicators (see Ethiopia Country Roadmap for example of existing indicators)
-Identifying essential policies and core institutional capacities needed for countries to be sufficiently self-reliant in adapting successfully to climate change
-How best to support climate change adaptation in developing countries with different contexts (e.g. least developed countries (LDCs), emerging markets, fragile or conflict-affected countries)
The tasks of the intern will be finalized at the start of the internship based on USAID’s priorities at that time as well as the interests and skills of the intern.

The newly formed bureau for Resilience and Food Security (RFS) houses four technical centers including the Center for Agriculture, Center for Water, Center for Nutrition, and the Center for Resilience. Livestock is a cross-cutting topic for the bureau as livestock can contribute to agricultural production, nutritious diets, and resilient populations. The Livestock Team within RFS is comprised of livestock experts representing various equities in the bureau including agriculture, nutrition, and resilience. This close-knit team collaborates often to provide technical assistance to Missions, assist with livestock program design, and elevate the importance of livestock within the bureau. This team is seeking an intern with an interest in livestock and international development to perform a literature review and landscape analysis on the use of antimicrobials in livestock production in developing countries and what role this might play in contributing to antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
The use of antimicrobials in livestock in developing countries is very different than the US as strict regulations like FDA's Veterinary Feed Directive may not be present. Producers may be able to access and administer antimicrobials without diagnostics or recommendations from an animal health worker. The aim of this project is to perform a literature review and generate a report on the state of antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance in developing countries. This can include, but is not limited to, regulations on antimicrobial acquisition and administration, residue limits or levels in meat products, residue testing or levels in the water supply, incidence and prevalence of AMR pathogens in livestock and humans, or other related AMR measures for which scientific literature is available. The second part of this project is a landscape analysis to determine what, if any, programs already exist to address the topic of AMR in developing countries. This will be accomplished through reviewing work of both USAID, our implementing partners, or other donors to determine what work is already ongoing. The intern will also reach out to and engage with our offices located in the field (or USAID Missions) to determine if they have any ongoing programming related to AMR. The final deliverable for this internship will be a written report consolidating the findings of the literature review and landscape analysis. If the intern has a desire, they can deliver a virtual presentation to the bureau synthesizing their findings.
Outside of the project, the intern will have the opportunity to attend weekly Livestock Team meetings and will gain an understanding of our role in providing technical assistance to Missions by attending meetings we have with our partners in the field. The intern will also gain a broader understanding of the role of USAID and our bureau in promoting and supporting the global effort to achieve food security in the most vulnerable populations. |

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Exploring Emerging Tech in International Development |
Help USAID explore the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of emerging technologies in international development. |
Agency for International Development |

USAID-USA-59 |

Analytical writing, Data analysis, Design thinking, Economic analysis, Software development |
Emerging trends in technology like the gig economy and tech-based approaches like artificial intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, 3D printing, and the Internet of Things present great promise for introducing high-impact innovations in developing country contexts. But often these types of technological innovations present as many challenges as they do benefits when it comes to leveraging them for equitable, inclusive development gains. This project will consist of activities that allow the U.S. Agency for International Development to better understand both the promise of new tech as well as the pitfalls that we need to be cautious about when these innovations impact international development.
This project will strive to cover a range of types (2-3) of emerging technology, key tech trends, or novel approaches to applying existing technology. The expectation will be to consider both the technical underpinnings of a new technology or tech trend, as well as the social and/or economic impacts of integrating these new approaches into developing country contexts.
Activities that may be part of this project:
* Researching innovations and trends in emerging technology to better understand potential benefits and disruptions in the field of international development;
* Landscaping current use of emerging tech in developing economies, working to document types of applications that are being integrated across sectors and geographies;
* Gathering/synthesizing information about documented and/or potential concerns around integration of this / these emerging tech applications in developing country contexts;
* Carrying out quantitative and/or qualitative analysis on impacts of emerging tech in low- and low-middle-income countries.
The team you'll be supporting -- the Strategy & Research team in the Center for Digital Development of the U.S. Global Development Lab -- has carried out significant research on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital identity. We'd like to further our exploration of these fields as well as consider 3-4 additional types of emerging technology (e.g., Internet of Things, 3-D Printing, Drones) or novel applications of digital tech. Which technologies, trends, or tech approaches you work on can be jointly determined, guided by team needs and VSFS intern interests. Depth vs breadth can be jointly determined as well; for example, you might study 1 significant tech trend or type emergent tech in great depth (e.g., studying multiple aspects of the Future of Work/gig economy) or you could cover multiple different technologies or emerging tech-based approaches (e.g., 3D printing, machine learning, and applications of differential privacy) in developing economies. This will be an exciting project that can cover a number of cutting-edge research topics and should lead to concrete outputs that will boost your career and your understanding of the field of international development! |

Weather and climate impacts are already undermining progress in reducing poverty and improving economic growth in countries around the world, as well as compromising the effectiveness and resilience of U.S. development assistance. To address this, USAID is implementing climate risk management (CRM): the practice of assessing, addressing and adaptively managing climate risks to development activities. An important aspect of CRM is the assessment of current and future climate risks and opportunities at various points during USAID’s program cycle.
As climate risk management is implemented, it is important to learn from the process and results so that improvements can be made. Likewise, it is important to stay abreast of new developments and innovative practices in climate risk management and risk management more generally, from theory to practice.
The Virtual Student will assist with assessing the quality and effectiveness of risk assessments and management and with research on climate risk management. The Virtual Student will synthesize results and findings, derive conclusions, and make recommendations to help improve the practice of managing climate risks at USAID.

USAID/Liberia is at its early stage of implementing its 5-year Country Development Cooperation Strategy (CDCS) that would support Liberians' efforts to continue to consolidate its democratic gains and rebuild its war-torn and Ebola-effected economy. Since the end of the Liberian Civil War in 2003, the country has held three national elections generally perceived as free and fair. It has also taken on the difficult task of rebuilding its economy, and strengthening its educational and health care delivery systems. The 2014-2015 Ebola Virus Disease outbreak drained the Government of vitally needed resources, slowed economic growth, and delayed key development projects. The response measures to COVID-19 has severely affected the economy and the daily lives, especially those in lower socio-economic status. The worldwide response led by the United States helped bring the worst of the outbreaks under control. Our work helps build confidence in public governance, brings reforms to key institutions and fosters measurable improvements in the lives of average Liberians.
You will conduct desk research using appropriate resources (e.g. academic papers, indices, local and international news stories, blogs, social media, virtual/phone interviews when appropriate) on a wide range of topics to create matrices, databases, reports, infographics, briefing memos, and/or presentations to help the Mission leadership make project and strategic program decisions.
USAID/Liberia has a wide range of programs across multiple sectors and strive to achieve results under several important USG and Agency initiatives including the President’s Malaria Initiative, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, and the Young African Leaders Initiative. Programming also contributes to the Administration’s Africa Strategy, which promotes prosperity in Africa and advancing American influence and prosperity abroad. In 2019, the Mission prioritized interventions in maternal and child health, reproductive health, water and sanitation, agriculture, construction, sustainable natural resource management, biodiversity protection, education, youth development, governance, and independent media.
To see the breadth of complex and exciting USAID/Liberia portfolio, please take a look at our CDCS: https://www.usaid.gov/sites/default/files/documents/1860/CDCS_Liberia_June_2024.pdf |

USAID’s Middle East Bureau (MEB) operates bilateral missions in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and West Bank/Gaza, and an office in Tunisia. Additionally, it operates regional programs and manages development programs through partners in countries without missions, including Syria, Libya and Yemen. The Office of Technical Support (TS) - Water and Environment Team is the ME Bureau’s in-house source for intellectual, technical and strategic leadership and programmatic expertise in the areas of water, environment, sustainable agriculture and food security, biodiversity, climate change, and environmental compliance issues.
Beyond driving natural disasters, water scarcity, climate change and environmental degradation have additional national security implications as a threat multiplier of existing homeland security hazards, such as local and regional conflicts and protracted crises. This is particularly true in the Middle East. Promoting science-based environmental stewardship and management of ecosystems is essential for peace, building resilient healthy communities, preserving natural resources, supporting sustainable economic growth, and fostering self-reliance.
In the first weeks of the internship, you will work with your mentor to design a specific project and/ or defining areas of support for ongoing work based on your interests, skills, and office priorities. We will empower you to leverage your existing skills and acquire new ones while learning about, and impacting, USAID’s development work in the Middle East and North Africa.
Examples of possible projects and work include:
* Analyzing and addressing impacts of COVID-19 and contributing to the response effort led by USAID’s COVID-19 Taskforce.
* Researching and analyzing country priorities and needs, development projects, and the scientific literature to inform USAID’s work and priorities in the Middle East and North Africa region. Focus areas may include: biodiversity and reconciliation ecology; sustainable agriculture and food security; zoonotic diseases and One Health solutions; water conservation challenges; climate change adaptation and climate risk management; environmental compliance; environmental justice; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH); integrated water resources management; and the water-energy nexus.
* Reviewing, researching, and summarising information to support and inform strategic policy and provide technical advice to senior leadership.

The Returned Peace Corps Volunteers @ USAID (RPCV@USAID) mission is to foster a community of RPCVs and supporters of the Peace Corps within USAID. We aim to embody both the mission of USAID, as well as the spirit of the Peace Corps. This includes an ongoing commitment to the Peace Corps’ Third Goal, to help promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans, and by engaging members in social events, volunteerism, and professional development.
The virtual intern would assist the RPCV@USAID with various administrative and research tasks. Tasks would include, but are not limited to, supporting the renewal of the board charter, helping draft the regular newsletter, attending board meetings and capturing notes, identifying professional development opportunities for group members, and other duties as assigned.
The Mission of Young Professionals at USAID (YP@AID) is to serve young professionals at USAID by building an internal community, boosting staff morale, expanding the professional community both inside and outside the Agency, and serving our DC metro community.
The virtual intern would help Young Professionals @ USAID (YP@AID) with its regular newsletter concerning relevant events and topics for young professionals. The intern would also assist in developing a white paper for challenges and solutions that young professionals face in the workforce. Additional opportunities to take on projects, attend professional events, and network within the Agency would occur throughout the year. |

Assessing Evidence to Strengthen Locally Led Development in Conflict and Post-Conflict Environments |
Seeking a creative and driven intern to help USAID's Office of Local Sustainability explore Agency-wide learning around opportunities and challenges of the application of locally led development principles and practices in fragile, conflict-affected, and non-permissive environments. |

The Office of Local Sustainability, within USAID’s Bureau for Economic Growth, Education and Environment (E3/LS), supports locally led development and enhances USAID’s ability to empower local actors to take the lead in solving their own development challenges. In the first four years of its flagship Local Works program, 24 Missions have been provided with knowledge, skills, tools, and resources to ensure that development assistance is locally led and advances self-reliance.
As the reach of the program expands towards increasingly sensitive operating environments, further analysis is necessary to identify lessons learned across the Agency while building local ownership in conflict-affected contexts, and to refine conflict-sensitive approaches to engaging local actors as leaders in development.
E3/LS seeks an intern to assist in better understanding risks and opportunities inherent in promoting locally led development in conflict and post-conflict environments.
After initial desk review synthesizing current literature exploring the humanitarian, development, and peace nexus, the intern will develop a research plan in collaboration with E3/LS, and will be connected with Missions and Operating Units across the Agency as appropriate, in order to gather and assess key evidence, good practices, relevant approaches, and promising programming options.
Inquiries to potentially explore within the research scope include, but are not limited to:
-What are the key challenges associated with promoting locally led development in conflict and post-conflict settings, and what has been effective in addressing these challenges?
-What are key opportunities for locally led development to contribute to elevate the agency of local actors, strengthen resilience, and work towards systemic change in contexts with weak state systems and governance?
-What has been learned about how approaches to engaging local actors should be adapted to ensure conflict-sensitive, trauma-sensitive, and do no harm principles are fully integrated at all stages of activities?
-How can locally led development approaches be responsive to reducing risk, vulnerability, and drivers of conflict?
In addition to contributing important analysis and recommendations towards future locally led development programming in conflict-affected areas, the intern will benefit from mentoring and networking opportunities and immersive learning about the work done by USAID, particularly approaches to promoting local sustainability. |

To achieve the objectives of the U.S. Government’s Global Food Security Strategy (GFSS) and A Food Secure 2030 vision, and U.S. the Water for the World Strategy, we need to harness the creativity and energy of the world’s largest generation of young people ever. Youth populations are growing at a rapid pace in developing countries: between now and 2030, 440 million young Africans will enter the labor market. At the same time, food systems are under heavy pressure. By 2050, the world will need 50 percent more food to feed a population of over 9.7 billion. Youth are essential partners on the journey to self-reliance. This journey is long, and young people must get involved as early as possible to help build the structural and agricultural transformations needed to move beyond foreign assistance. Young people are also critical to global stability, economic growth and development today and into the future.
Youth empowerment and livelihoods are critical to achieving each of the GFSS objectives: 1) inclusive and sustainable agriculture-led growth, 2) strengthened resilience among people and systems, and 3) a well-nourished population, especially among women and children. Interns involved in this project will support the work of the USAID/RFS in strengthening youth contributions to inclusive development, also in line with the USAID Youth in Development Policy the Agency’s Positive Youth Development approach. Intern/s will:
• Conduct trend analyses, including within the context of COVID-19, desert locust infestations and other emerging threats, of key youth development indicators based on data available for USAID RFS priority countries.
• Update RFS information on the landscape of activities undertaken to engage youth in Feed the Future and other programming.
• Prepare research and issue briefs on topics related to youth and food systems, with a focus on agriculture-led growth (including systems approaches), resilience, nutrition and water security, sanitation and hygiene.
• Research and write brief stories describing program approaches and impact, capturing in particular the voices and experiences of young people in collaboration with points of contact in USAID country missions.
• Conduct literature reviews on relevant topics such as youth-focused market systems change approaches to agriculture-led growth and youth and water security.
• Suggest assignments based on interns’ own areas of interest and expertise as relevant to RFS inclusive development objectives.

Up to three interns will work on this project. Internships are the most successful when they involve not only the completion of a set of tasks outlined by the requesting agency but when they also offer opportunities for interns to propose ideas in line with their unique interests. Each intern will thus be welcome to propose and potentially pursue tasks they believe will support attention to youth in any area of the RFS's work. According to official statistics, the United States ranks 8th in terms of total number of FDI projects and 11th in terms of total amount of FDI into Vietnam, trailing behind South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. However, these bilateral statistics show only the direct investment links to a destination, i.e. where the FDI source is registered and does not reflect the fact that investment flows are channelled through special purpose vehicles and offshore financial centres. Studies have shown that 30–50% of investment has been channelled through these conduits, leading the International Monetary Fund to coin this phenomenon as “phantom FDI.” For Vietnam, official data shows a significant level of investment from off-shore jurisdictions frequently used for corporate formation, and as a tax/liability shelter.
The OECD issued a Revised Benchmark Definition of Foreign Direct Investment in 2008, which recommended that countries compile inward investment positions according to the “ultimate investing country (UIC)” to identify the country of the investor that ultimately controls the investments in their country. The OECD only started collecting FDI information based on this revised definition in 2014. Currently, only 14 OECD countries are reporting FDI stock by ultimate investors.
As Vietnam joins the ranks of lower middle income countries, and becomes more integrated into global value chains, the country could benefit from a more strategic approach to attracting foreign investment. A more representative methodology for calculating FDI would help Vietnam thoughtfully engage with foreign investors and assist USAID with supporting Vietnam's development objectives.
The VSFS intern will support USAID/Vietnam Mission staff to conduct research and analysis that will inform USAID's engagement and technical assistance related to private sector engagement. This VSFS intern will work collaboratively with USAID/Vietnam staff to:
Define the research and analytical methodology;
Verify that the methodology is replicable and universally applicable;
Update the ranking of FDI sources into Vietnam using the methodology;
Ground truth the methodology using external sources; and
Develop a detailed report to share within the USG. |

Depending on the intern’s skills and interest the following could also be included in the internship:
- Developing a regional investment flow analysis;

USAID-PHL-7 |

Analytical writing, Economic analysis, Political Analysis, Research, Writing |
Are you inquisitive and resourceful? Are you interested in conducting market research? Do you like working with people to implement your research recommendations? Are you interested in international development? USAID Philippines is looking for an individual to update its Gender Analysis, particularly after COVID-19 has impacted the economy, and women, in particular.
You will produce three gender analyses for use in Philippines strategic planning in the areas of economic growth, governance, and environment objectives. You will then work with each team to ensure that items identified are incorporated into USAID projects in those areas. We know that Gender-Based Violence has increased during the pandemic. But how do we address this, for both women, and men, in the short and long term activities of USAID? This is one of many issues you will address in your research.
You will correspond with a wide variety of key stakeholders, including Filipinos that may benefit from USAID programming. You will work with USAID employees, who will provide in-person and technical literature from local academic institutions, civil society organizations, and think tanks. You will use country-level gender analyses undertaken by the government and other donors or academics; reports by United Nations (UN) Human Rights Committees; and shadow reports and reports by UN and regional intergovernmental organizations, NGOs, and USAID implementers.
You should have an ability to conduct research using a variety of sources on the web, and a working knowledge of survey monkey or google forms. You will start with voluminous reports and data, and distill these into a report that outlines the status of women, and men, in the Philippines after COVID-19.
You will then develop guidance for USAID to incorporate key factors in designing programs with particular attention to Filipono women, and men's changing needs due to COVID-19's impacts on the economy and political landscape.
Perfect for the analytical thinker and good writer.

You will help shape the visuals for a wide range of materials - both electronic and printed - such as matrices, maps, reports, infographics, briefing memos, posters, presentations, and other materials to effectively: 1) help the Mission leadership make project and strategic program decisions; 2) reach the Liberian and American public; 3) convey the information to selected audience during speeches, meetings, and presentations. The intern must be able to comfortably use GIS databases to create new map layers and generate useful maps that can be manipulated and incorporated into the materials.

USAID is looking to expand its research on effective youth civic education, civic engagement, and leadership development- especially how it can be leveraged in relation to the secondary shocks from the current COVID crisis. This understanding is particularly critical for marginalized groups of young people and how youth relate to state relations and social movements.
The purpose of this desk study is to develop a written, professional report and digital presentation of promising practices and evidence on what works in improving youth civic engagement, civic education, and leadership development globally. The overarching theme is identifying best practices of these types of activities which support USAID's positive youth development (PYD) methodology and approach. The study will also provide recommendations on how to increase the effectiveness, scale, and sustainability of these type of programs.
The results from this desk review will be used to develop research and programming briefs which will serve as a resource for policymakers and practitioners interested in evidence-based best practices and examples of youth civic and political engagement. |

Project description (3000) characters: The Evidence for Democratic Transitiins project seeks to provide the Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) with the latest research and evidence on issues related to its work. Illustrative research questions include:
What types of interventions are most effective in promoting democratic transitions and under what conditions?
How do you build resilience to extremist violence in vulnerable communities?
How does disinformation spread in semi-literate communities and how can it best be addressed?
How does foreign influence affect the countries we are working in and the consequences for our programming?
How has COVID-19 changed the types of interventions possible, who the target populations are, and how they should be implemented to prevent democratic backsliding and democratic processes?
Interns will consider academic peer-reviewed literature as well as gray literature from NGOs, think-tanks, and other sources as well as internal evidence collected over 25 year of OTI programming. This project will contribute to OTI’s learning agenda and interns will share their work out with the office for review and commentary, giving them the opportunity to learn from the vast experience of OTI staff.
The project will also provide ad hoc research support to country programs working on transitions around the world and contribute to the office research digest.
OTI supports U.S. foreign policy objectives by helping local partners advance peace and democracy. OTI provides fast, flexible, short-term assistance targeted at key political transition and stabilization needs. Strategically designed for each unique situation, OTI has laid the foundation for long-term development by promoting reconciliation, jumpstarting local economies, supporting emerging independent media, and fostering peace and democracy through innovative programming. In countries transitioning from authoritarianism to democracy, from violence to peace, or following a fragile peace, OTI’s programs serve as catalysts for positive political change.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) leads international development and humanitarian efforts to save lives, reduce poverty, strengthen democratic governance and help people progress beyond assistance. The Global Acquisition and Assistance (A&A) Lab is housed in the Management Bureau's Office of Acquisition and Assistance (OAA). The A&A Lab is an interconnected network of A&A staff advancing the Agency's mission through workforce development and the testing and scaling of innovations in A&A both domestically and at our field missions abroad.
We are looking for forward-thinking strategists and designers to help modernize the way the Global A&A Lab does business and design a pathway to shift current OAA culture to one that is kind, flexible, and adaptive using scientifically proven methods. Interns will learn about USAID, Effective Partnering and Procurement Reform efforts, the Agency's A&A Strategy, and USAID foreign and civil service. Familiarity with international development and/or procurement is a plus, but not required, as learning is part of this internship experience. |

Developing and transition countries can contribute to the mitigation of global greenhouse gas emissions including through energy sector reform, adoption of renewable and cleaner sources of energy, conservation of forests, and sustainable management of agriculture, forests, and other landscapes. At the same time, weather and climate impacts are undermining progress in reducing poverty and improving economic growth in countries around the world, as well as compromising the effectiveness and resilience of U.S. development assistance. To address these many challenges, USAID supports renewable energy, sustainable landscapes, and climate change adaptation in developing countries and applies climate risk management (CRM) to USAID development assistance.
The intern will support staff in the USAID Office of Global Climate Change (E3/GCC) and the Climatelinks implementation team to research the stories behind USAID climate and development activities. These stories will help USAID document:
Impact of activities, drawing on performance monitoring and evaluation results and qualitative assessments of stakeholders
Context in which the activities are operating
Challenges experienced in the implementation of activities and strategies used to address or design around those challenges
Reflections of stakeholders involved in activities, including lessons learned
The reporting will further:
Communications of the impact of USAID assistance
Learning among development practitioners
Documenting nature and impact of USAID assistance
The tasks of the intern will be finalized at the start of the internship based on USAID’s priorities at that time as well as the interests and skills of the intern.
