How to Apply to VSFS Projects

Applications for the 2017-18 Virtual Student Federal Service (VSFS) program will be accepted on from July 1-31, 2017. Please read all instructions carefully.

Step 1: Create an account with USAJOBS. Be sure to fill out all of the required sections (Contact info and Eligibility) on your Profile. For tips, visit the USAJOBS How to create an account page.

Step 2: Build your resume using the USAJOBS resume builder. You MUST build your resume using USAJOBS’s Resume Builder. For the Virtual Student Federal Service, we are only able to accept resumes built through the online application.

Step 3: Once you’ve built your resume, go to the USAJOBS home page and search the USAJOBS position listings for “VSFS” or “Virtual Student Federal Service” (without the quote marks). Note: we will update this site with the direct link when the vacancy announcement opens on July 1.

Step 4: Click “Apply” to start the application process! (Once you make it through USAJOBS application and are on the U.S. Department of State jobs portal, you’ll be able to apply for three of your favorite projects.)

Step 5: This is the start of the USAJOBS application process! Click “Start Application” to begin.

Step 6: Remember the resume you built in Step 2? Click the circle at the top right-hand corner of your resume. A check mark will appear. Click the “Save & Continue” box at the bottom of the page to move on to “Select Documents.”

Step 7: Upload your transcript (official or unofficial). Once you’ve uploaded and saved your transcript to your USAJOBS profile, you can also check it to attach to your application.

(While you are on the USAJOBS site, your built resume and transcript are the only two documents you’ll need to attach. After you enter the Department of State portal, you will be prompted to enter your Statement of Interest for your selected projects.)

Step 8: Review your package of documents. Resume and transcript selected and saved? Click the box to acknowledge that you have reviewed your resume and document(s).

Step 9: You’re almost there! To continue your application, read the certification message and click on the “Continue Application with Agency” box. Then click “Continue to Agency Site” to enter the Department of State portal. You’ll see a pop-up with your documents going into a USAJOBS folder.

Step 10: You’ve made it to the U.S. Department of State site! Click APPLY TO THIS VACANCY to keep going.

Step 11: You’ll be asked to submit your personal application. Many of the questions are the same or similar to what you answered on USAJOBS, but please answer this series of personal information questions to identify your eligibility.

Step 12: Now it’s time to choose your projects! (To see project descriptions, go to the VSFS website and click on “See All Projects”. Use the Search box to find specific projects.)

Step 13: Answer more questions! You will be asked to answer a few more questions, including a section where you can add your statement of interest. You may apply for up to three projects and you can note in this section how your skills apply to each of your chosen projects.

Step 14: Don’t forget to get “Confirmation!” As you finish answering the questions, you will see blue check marks in the circles at the top of the page. You will need to upload your transcript again. When your application has been successfully submitted, you will see a green check box showing “Confirmation” – which means you’re all done!
