Applications for the 2020-21 Virtual Student Federal Service (VSFS) program will be accepted July 1-31, 2020 on USAJOBS.gov. There is only one VSFS vacancy announcement.

There's a new way to sign in this year!
It's called login.gov for safety and security.
Click on "Create an account" to get started. Tip: Use the "Remember this browser for 30 days" option to make sign-in a wee bit smoother.
Once you've created your account, you'll check your email to confirm your address:
After you confirm your password, you'll need to create a password- one that's at least 9 chracters long:
Next step: another security measure- Your personal key!
And now.. Hooray, you've created your account!
Now you're ready to create your profile on USAJOBS (if you don't already have one)!
After you create your profile, it's time to build your resume! Note:You MUST submit your resume using this form. For the Virtual Student Federal Service, we are only able to accept applications through the online built resume application.

Add all the information you can:
Once you've built your resume, go back to the USAJOBS home page and search the USAJOBS position listings for "VSFS" or "Virtual Student Federal Service".

Once you see the VSFS position link, click "Apply" to start the application process! (After you've completed the USAJOBS application process, you'll submit your info and documents, and then be redirected to the U.S. Department of State jobs portal, where you can apply for up to three projects. To preview the projects go to the VSFS website and click on "See All Projects", and use the Search box to find specific projects.)
This is the start of the USAJOBS application process! Click "Start Application" to begin.
Remember the resume you built? Click the circle at the top right-hand corner of your resume. A check mark will appear. Click the "Save & Continue" box at the bottom of the page to move on to "Select Documents".
Upload your transcript (official or unofficial). Once you've uploaded and saved your transcript to your USAJOBS profile, you can also check it to attach to your application.
(While you are on the USAJOBS site, your resume and transcript are the only two documents you'll need to attach. After you enter the Department of State portal, you can also add a Statement of Interest for your selected projects.)
Review your package of documents. Resume and transcript selected and saved? Click the box to acknowledge that you have reviewed your resume and document(s).
You're almost there! To continue your application, read the certification message and click on the "Continue Application with Agency" box. Then click "Continue to Agency Site" to enter the Department of State portal.

You'll know you've been re-directed to the Agency Site (called Gateway to State) when you see the page below. Click APPLY TO THIS VACANCY:

You will be asked a series of personal information questions to identify your eligibility.

Now it's time to choose your Top 3 projects!
Answer More Questions! (You're almost at the end, we promise.)
You will be asked to answer a few more questions, including one where you can add your statement of interest. You may include links to samples of your work online, your LinkedIn profile, or other appropriate online materials.
Since you may apply for up to three projects, try to include relevant links for those projects. Tip: try to note which of your skills apply to each project.
Note: We have increased The Statement of Interest to 3500 words!
And, finally..
Getting "Confirmation"
As you finish answering the questions, you will see blue check marks in the circles at the top of the page. Finally, you will need to upload your transcript again.
When your application has been successfully submitted, you will see a green check mark inside the last circle and the word “Confirmation” below it – which means you’re all done!
