Project Code: STATE-ECU-184
|Project Title||Distance English Conversation Classes for English Majors in Ecuador|
|Project Summary||Interns will lead conversation classes with English major students in Ecuador one hour per week|
|Country/Region of Focus||Ecuador|
|Agency||Department of State|
|Number of Interns||5|
This project supports English language education in Ecuador by having U.S. interns hold conversation classes directly with small groups of university-level English majors via a digital video connection such as Google Hangouts. Most of the students will become English teachers, of which there is a great need in Ecuador. The student groups are located in cities throughout Ecuador, and many lack the opportunity to interact with native English speakers. The U.S. interns will be provided with language instruction materials to facilitate conversations, but are free to be creative in finding materials and topics. Exact lesson plans are not required, but this could be good practice for students who plan to pursue teaching as a profession. Interns are required to report on attendance and progress with the Mission contact on a weekly basis. Program time commitment for interns includes a total of two hours per week for English conversation classes, plus time for preparation, consulting with the participants, and reporting.
Education in general with a focus on the teaching of English is one of the U.S. government's highest priorities
in Ecuador and a strong point of cooperation in our bilateral relationship.
