|Project Title||Foreign City Mapper|
|Project Summary||Students wishing to use their mapping, cartography, geographic information systems skills should apply to this internship. The Master Planning Office is looking for creative interns to be apart of our embassy and consulate site searches.|
|Agency||Department of State|
|Number of Interns||4|
The Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) directs the worldwide overseas building
program for the Department of State. For projects in the out-years of our New Embassy Compound (NEC) and New Consulate Compound (NCC) Programs, beyond 2020, OBO will begin searching for sites over the next few years. In preparation for these upcoming projects, it is essential to gather background data and imagery, at
multiple scales. This vital information includes, but is not limited to, city organization, public
transportation routes, area development, and growth trends and constraints. Potential sites will also
be evaluated on their sustainable merits; therefore, climate data is also critical to our analysis (wind,
rain/water, solar, ect).
Throughout the year the intern will develop a comprehensive background study of two post cities (one
per semester). The information from the comprehensive background study will be incorporated into a
mapping tool (Geoloader) provided by OBO.
The Mapping Tool Application (Geoloader) will be used as the primary method for collecting Unclassified City
Background Information in the form of GIS data. The application will allow GIS data to be collected in
a standardized way. The intern must adhere to OBO provided templates and naming conventions.
The Master Planning Office is looking for students who wish to work on any major city. Examples in the past have been Prague, Basra, Buenos Aires, etc..
