English conversation circles are especially popular with Egyptian students. Students come to the American Center (AC) where AC staff form groups based on self-identified language ability (beginner, intermediate, advanced). Participants are striving to practice their English, gain vocabulary, improve their grammar and learn about America. A topic which relates to an American theme or policy issue is identified in advance to stimulate discussion. Circles are facilitated by an American officer or family member. Each circle is composed of 10-12 students aged 20-30. Most are university students with some recent graduates.
Intern will draft new topical ideas of interest to American youth that Egyptians will also find engaging. With guidance from the post, topics for the coming year will be selected based on monthly themes and mission goals. Intern will create targeted vocabulary lists based on the topic, draft worksheets for student review and develop key questions that spur conversation. Other creative solutions such as identifying 2-5 minute videos that lay a baseline for discussion are welcome. Intern will also conduct a virtual conversation circle once a week. Our conversation club meets on Wednesdays at 3 p.m. (9 a.m. EST) but this can be negotiable dependent on intern's availability.
Knowledge and Skills you need:
*Good English language skills, specifically grammar and vocabulary
*Ability to research topics for relevant material whether text or audio/video
*Assess resources for appropriateness and reading level
*Ability to develop worksheets and vocabulary lists
*Ability to promote conversation and develop rapport with Egyptian youth

The American Center Cairo is a busy space where Egyptians come to improve their English, experience American culture, find out how to apply to American universities and participate in technology and soft skill training. Our team includes 8 locally employed Egyptians and one American officer. Our programs are persistently over-subscribed with English language learning opportunities being the most popular. This is a place to be creative and experiment with new ideas. Intern will primarily work with the American Officer and the Outreach Assistant.
