Project Description

Mali is a country beset by conflict. Violent extremist groups operate throughout large swaths of the country’s Center and North following consolidation of three major terrorist organizations in March 2017. In central Mali terrorist groups have exploited age-old ethnic rivalries between pastoralists and agricultural communities. Intercommunal violence incidents such as targeted killings and the burning of entire villages occur with increasing regularity. Armed militias dominate much of northern Mali.
U.S. Embassy Bamako seeks an intern to conduct online to identify, map, and catalogue human rights abuses committed by terrorist groups, militias, Malian government forces, and other actors in Mali. This reporting will be used to inform four congressionally-mandated reports: Human Rights, International Religious Freedom, Trafficking in Persons, and Child Labor reports.
