Project Description

The English Access Microscholarship Program is an after-school, intensive English Language Program for underserved students ages 13-22. In addition to learning English and improving their written and spoken skills, students are learning more about U.S. culture and what ways their own culture is similar. We want educators to go beyond just talking about holidays and have specific materials developed to help learners delve into issues the countries share - environmental, societal, educational, etc. and how we can learn from one another.

These materials will serve as the supplemental resource or background materials which teachers can re-purpose for specific skill development of the learners. The materials need not be turned into specific lesson plans, but certainly if the intern has a background in educational design, we would be interested in seeing ideas. We are looking for research into the issues for reference for further development.

Additional Information

Although Access is a worldwide program, there is room for context-specific materials to be used in the classroom that will relate better to students experiences. We seek to help them learn more about the United States, but be able to better understand that information based on something similar in their own context.
