The project will involve extensive research into all available files at the U.S. National Archives regarding the 97th General Hospital of the U.S. Army which occupied these buildings from 1945-1997. In addition, the project includes research into any online files available in Germany regarding the period 1938-1945 when the buildings served as a German Luftwaffe hospital. Reaching out to previous individuals who worked at the hospital will also add eyewitness accounts to document the history. The project will clarify the past use of the buildings and the old art previously and currently still displayed in some of the halls. To date, little to no history has been found regarding the period 1938-1945 and no documentation has been located regarding any of the known pieces of art. As a result, there is the possibility of locating previously unknown files and greatly adding to the current knowledge of the history of the buildings and art pieces.
This project will be ideal for someone having a strong interest in history and German-American cultural ties. We have routinely received requests from former veterans to tour the buildings where they once served in the 97th General Hospital and we try to accomodate them as much as possible. There is still a lot of history to uncover and we hope this project will add to our knowledge of the buildings and fill in the many gaps in our current historical display and museum.
