The United States and Germany are two of the world’s largest economies, and yet there remains considerable opportunities for expanded trade. As a virtual intern, you will contribute to the strategic objectives of the U.S. Consulate Hamburg. Upon joining our Political and Economic (P/E) section, you will be responsible for researching information on U.S. trade relations in the consulate’s district, which consists of five Northern German states: Hamburg, Bremen, Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Information desired includes but is not limited to: (1) number of U.S. companies in each state, their revenue, employee and sales statistics; (2) U.S. companies in each state that are market leaders for Germany/Europe; (3) companies from each state with a U.S. presence, their revenue, employee and sales statistics; (4) Northern German companies in the United States that are U.S. market leaders; (5) U.S. import, export, and other relevant trade statistics for each state: number of companies with U.S./Northern Germany trade, overall employment and investment etc. The research will culminate in fact sheets outlining U.S. ties to each state and will be published on our web site, on social media, and in print form. We will provide you with guidance on relevant sources, including e.g. local chambers of commerce, AmCham, state ministries, investment agencies, and statistics offices. This is a unique opportunity to directly inform U.S. engagement and policy in Europe’s largest economy, and one of the U.S.’s most important partners. For this exciting project, you will not only work closely with the P/E team in Hamburg but also your work itself will have high visibility.
