|Project Title||Belize it! Be part of the Public Affairs team at U.S. Embassy Belmopan!|
|Project Summary||Assist the hemisphere's smallest Public Affairs Section (PAS) in creating our daily morning news summary for our readers at the Embassy and in Washington. Help manage and contribute to our active Embassy Facebook and Twitter Accounts.|
|Agency||Department of State|
|Number of Interns||3|
In the Public Affairs Section (PAS) of U.S. Embassy Belmopan, we focus on furthering U.S. foreign policy through a variety of programs involving press, education, and culture. One of our main tasks is to deliver concise and accurate information to our readers at the Embassy as well as in Washington on the situation on the ground here in Belize as well as Belizean media's reaction to our foreign and domestic policies. The Embassy’s daily news summary is one of our special products--over 200 people at the Embassy and in Washington receive the digest every day and for many of our readers this is their only source of information on Belizean news. The interns would send their draft to PAS, who would, in turn disseminate the product to our audience.
The intern would also have an opportunity to help contribute to the U.S. Embassy’s lively social media presence. The U.S. Embassy Facebook page managed by the Public Affairs Section currently has around 42,000 followers, more than 10% the population of Belize! Maintaining the page’s high profile in Belize requires constant maintenance. Interns would have the opportunity to propose and create original content for the Facebook page as well as respond to the many inquiries we receive from followers, including from Belize’s large number of U.S. citizen visitors. In addition, interns will have an opportunity to contribute to the Embassy’s fledgling Twitter account, which was recently relaunched after a two-year hiatus and is an important platform for policy statements for the U.S. Embassy. The intern would also have an opportunity to perform an analysis on the viability of relaunching a U.S. Embassy Instagram before the completion of the internship.
Successful completion of the project would help reinvigorate our Twitter and Facebook accounts with interesting new content and meaningful public engagement, as well as help support and strengthen a substantive daily news summary product for U.S. Embassy and Washington readers.
