Project Description

The English Resource Center (ERC) is a new initiative of the U.S. Embassy through our partners American Councils and the Tajik Pedagogical University, designed to help the 50+ English instructors at the university improve their speaking and teaching skills. The Intern will work closely with the ERC coordinator and English Language Fellow in order to help produce instruction materials, lesson plans, and online content, including but not limited to: grammar, pronunciation exercises, classroom drills, worksheets and handouts, listening exercises, and American cultural topics.

The Intern will also lead occasional or regular virtual sessions as a native English speaker on any of the above topics. The ERC has the capabilities to host up to 15-20 students for a presentation, and will continue to put virtual content online during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. The Intern may be asked to conduct occasional one-on-one sessions with an English instructor, providing personal assistance with a difficult topic.

The difference in time zones may require early morning or late night sessions, and the ERC coordinator will suggest an appropriate videoconferencing platform.

Additional Information

Tajikistan in general, and the Pedagogical University in particular, has a large and eager group of prospective English learners. One thing that they are often lacking in is conversations with native English speakers, providing the opportunity to hear natural pronunciation and phrasing.

This internship would serve as a great introduction to a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) career or a springboard to international English teaching opportunities such as the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant program.
