Project Description

Develop a social network map of the Office of Local Sustainability's (E3/LS) connections to inform the team on how best to maximize our ability to communicate, educate, and influence policy throughout the Agency.  Final deliverables will be an interactive, updatable map of the Office's comprehensive Agency-wide social network, findings, and conclusions. The intern would then co-develop a set of recommendations and action items (scenario planning) with E3/LS. Anticipated tasks include, but are not limited to: 

1) Initial scoping report
a) Specific research questions co-developed with E3/LS staff/end users, and identification of
relevant SNA metrics
b) Proposed dataset structure (may be informed by initial pilot)
c) Platform inquiry: Gephi, UCINET, NodeXL and/or other appropriate software package

2) Data collection - design and conduct an SNA survey plus key informant interviews and/or focus
group discussions:
a) Technical experts that provide input into LS work and characteristics/attributes
b) Audiences for LS products and characteristics/attributes

3) Data cleaning 

4) Mapping data in social network analysis software

5) Data analysis and reporting

6) Findings and conclusions

7) Presentation for the LS office

8) Support E3/LS team to access and interpret the data and to develop recommendations and action
items (scenario planning) for communications, education, and policy

9) Documentation of research methodology and instructions for updating the social network map in the
selected platform

10) Submission of final report, data set, and network map

Additional Information

Ideal candidates will have:

-Strong communication, presentation, and analytical writing skills
-Experience with social network analysis and mapping
-Experience with qualitative research and data collection, including platforms such as NVivo, or others
-Experience with data visualization, including familiarity with Tableau or other appropriate software

E3/LS is looking for candidates who:

-Have and/or are working toward a degree in International Affairs/Development, Political Science, Information Science, Data
Science; Analytics, Economics, or other social science
-Have experience conducting social network analysis, surveys, and mapping
-Have experience collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and interpreting data strongly preferred
-Have experience communicating research findings for professional and practitioner audiences

The Office is also looking for candidates with:

-Strong organizational, interpersonal, and qualitative research skills for leading key informant interviews and focus group discussions
-The ability to work both collaboratively and independently in a virtual environment
-The ability to meet deadlines and produce high quality work
-Familiarity with Google Suite and other online collaboration tools
