|Project Summary||MapGive seeks enthusiastic interns to keep a steady drumbeat of engaging social media and website content on open map data and humanitarian efforts. Help us tell the story of how and why thousands around the world are building the first free and open map of the world and how it supports diplomacy.|

MapGive’s digital storytelling goals are twofold: 1) educate and inspire volunteers, mappers, and others, especially U.S. Department of State program participants and alumni, to use open mapping tools to build open data and an open map of the world. 2) highlight U.S. Department of State collaborations and contributions to open data creation, the OpenStreetMap community, and impacts of these efforts.
We are seeking a cohort of 3-4 interns with an interest in humanitarian mapping and/or experience with creating online content for digital communication. Skills listed are desired, but not required. No previous experience with open mapping necessary, as all interns will be provided with individualized and group support to learn more about the open mapping community.
NOTE! This project cycle is intended to start in Fall 2020, but we are interested in working with interested students during SUMMER 2020 as well. Please reach out to us at email@example.com if you are interested in similar or ad-hoc projects with the MapGive team in June or July of 2020.
Social Media and Blogging Support
-- Co-manage the MapGive content calendar. Research, curate, and draft multimedia content for @MapGive and mapgive.state.gov (mainly text, graphics, and visuals for tweets, blog posts, possibly quarterly newsletter) relevant to open mapping. Content can focus on volunteer engagement, STEAM education, leadership, entrepreneurship, and other themes relevant to different State program alumni, and/or humanitarian and development outcomes.
-- Research open mapping efforts related to Covid-19 impact and response to package for social media and online content.
-- Brainstorm with State's Humanitarian Information Unit team and connect directly with humanitarian mapping partners and experts to solicit input and quotes for social media and blog content. Specifically, connect with Secondary Cities partners and alumni to create social media sized posts and blog content (either for @MapGive, @StateHIU, or social media for Posts and other bureaus) that highlight impact and capacity building; focusing on creating 2-3 social media posts (with visuals) for each of the 2C projects around the world.
-- When necessary, help to create social media kits for mapping events hosted with U.S. embassies, American Spaces, and other State-affiliated groups.

Interns should have strong organizational and interpersonal skills for teamwork and partnership development, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively on assigned tasks in a virtual environment.
Interns in bachelors and graduate programs are welcome, including those in a field of study related to topics to humanitarian and development efforts or geography, or with an interest in such topics.
MapGive is a U.S. Department of State public diplomacy initiative that encourages and increases participation in the global open mapping community and facilitates the creation of open geographic data specifically to support humanitarian relief and development programs. For many places around the world, this data is incomplete, out of date, out of reach, or it simply does not exist. At the same time, that data is much needed for sustainable development and disaster resilience. MapGive supported projects have helped in nearly every major humanitarian response in recent years - including the Nepal Earthquake, the Ebola Crisis, and the Rohingya refugee Crisis.
