Project Description

BOEM is the only agency that leases access to sand resources in federal waters. This sand is often used in beach nourishment or coastal restoration projects along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. During dredging, biologists collect information on animals observed at sea, collected by trawl, or onboard a dredge. BOEM is looking for a student to help organize and analyze these data. It would first entail entering data into accessible formats like tables and spreadsheets. From here, the data could be analyzed using Excel tools (like pivot tables and graphs) or writing code in a software like Matlab or R. Findings from the student would be used by BOEM to better understand how animals occur on different sand resources, improving decisions on mitigation and operational measures.
